Driven by continued increases in premiums and modest declines in pure losses, the U.S property/casualty industry posted a second consecutive first-quarter underwriting profit in 2013, as results improved compared with 2012. The industry's pretax operating and net income showed strong increases on the improved underwriting results, while the level of investment income remained steady.
