Statistical Studies are data-driven analytical reviews of top-line insurance topics. The studies are based on data A.M. Best collects from insurer statement filings with state insurance departments. These filings include data on assets, liabilities, capital and surplus, and other typical balance sheet items. An A.M. Best Rating Analyst reviews the data and provides a brief analysis of one aspect concerning the insurance industry. The goal is to provide a numeric picture of the topic from which readers can draw their own conclusions.
Special Reports are in-depth analytical reports that tend to focus on larger industry issues, such as trends in global reinsurance or rising medical costs; they establish and communicate A.M. Best's opinion or position. More emphasis is placed on interpreting the data and drawing conclusions that insurance executives can use to make better decisions. They often contain data that is more focused on the industry as a whole, rather than individual companies.
