Shea-Porter took bachelor's and and masters degrees from the University of New Hampshire. A former city chair of the Rochester, N.H. Democratic Party, she also served on the staff of retired Gen. Wesley Clark's New Hampshire primary campaign in 2004. Shea-Porter defeated Jeb Bradley in 2006's U.S. House race, becoming New Hampshire's first woman senator.
