Clerked for Chief Justice Oliver Seth of the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in the late 1970s before becoming a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's criminal division. Served as chief counsel to the New Mexico Department of Health and Environment and in 1990, became the state's attorney general. Elected to the U.S. House in 1998. Running for the seat vacated by Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M.
