Brooklyn native joined Minnesota Attorney General out of law school in 1976, eventually became the state’s solicitor general. Was elected mayor of St. Paul in 1993 as a Democrat but switched parties three years later. Mounted an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 1998, losing in a three-way race won by independent party candidate Jesse Ventura. In 2002, defeated former Vice President Walter Mondale to assume the late Paul Wellstone's U.S. Senate seat.
