Heller attended college at the Univerity of Southern California. He later worked as a stockbroker and broker-trader on the Pacific Stock Exchange. A former deputy state treasurer in Nevada, Heller served in the Nevada Assembly from 1990 to 1994, after which he became Secretary of State. He defeated Jill Derby in November 2006 for his district's U.S. House seat.
