Derby holds bachelor's degrees from the University of California at San Francisco and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and a master's and doctorate from the University of California at Davis. She ran an unsuccessful bid against Dean Heller for Nevada's 2nd district U.S. House seat in 2006, and was later elected state chairwoman of the Democratic Party in March 2007.
