The first Democrat to represent the Florida's 16th congressional district since its creation in 1973, Foley defeated write-in candidate Joe Negron in 2006 after the resignation of incumbent Republican Mark Foley just weeks before the election. Got his start in the computer business in the 1980s and in 1995 co-founded venture capital firm Union Atlantic LLC. That firm was merged in 1998 with vFinance.com, a site that matches venture capitalists and with entrepreneurs. Mahoney subsequently served as chairman and chief operating officer of vFinance Inc. Previously a long-time Republican, Mahoney became a Democrat in 2004 and is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative Democratic congressmen.
