Spent a year and a half as an aide to the First Selectman of Trumbull, Conn., in the early 1970s, and was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1974. He was elected to Congress in an August 1987 special election to succeed the late Stewart McKinney. Shays has served as chairman of the House Government Reform Subcommittee on Human Resources and the Subcommittee on National Security.
