Became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks in 1953 before being appointed legislative counsel, and later chief legal officer, of the Department of the Interior by President Eisenhower. Elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964 and became majority leader in his second term. Appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-governor Walter J. Hickel. Has been re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2002. Stevens enters the election under indictment for alleged violations of the Ethics in Government Act.
