Current Office: Governor
Early public service experience includes serving as chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, senior advisor to President Reagan, and director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush. Also served as president of Eli Lilly & Co.'s North American pharmaceutical operations and as chief executive officer of the Indiana-based think tank, the Hudson Institute. He was elected governor in 2004 and sworn into office in January 2005.
Issues: In March, signed legislation defining and banning stranger-originated life insurance. Also signed a bill barring municipalities from billing motorists for responding to the scene of an accident. In August 2007, approved a 44-cent increase in the state cigarette tax, with the funds used to fund the state's Medicaid plan and help for small businesses to offer health insurance to their employees.
