The 2003 E-Fusion Award

The E-Fusion Award is designed to highlight outstanding, resourceful uses of Internet technology by an insurance organization. The candidate project, product or service must have been introduced or redeveloped recently and be directly related to the business of insurance.

Availity LLC was named recipient of the second annual A.M.Best Co. E-Fusion Award for its online portal Availity@Gateway, which connects Florida-based physicians, hospitals, clearinghouses and other health-care professionals with insurers. Availity, L.L.C. is a joint venture between two health insurance competitors, Navigy, Inc. (a subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc.) and Humana Inc. The project is based in Jacksonville, Fla.

Finalists included:

* PersonalPlans by Marsh@WorkSolutions offers multiple product information and facilitates the enrollment activities of employer voluntary benefit plans. Marsh@WorkSolutions, a unit of Marsh Inc., is based in W. Des Moines, Iowa.

* AnnuiTRAC is Integrity Life Insurance Company's producer Web site. Integrity's offices are in Louisville, Ky and it is a member of The Western & Southern Financial Group, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.

* Wildnet Insurance Platform for Global Aerospace (www.pbo-online.com) is an Internet-based insurance trading and processing platform. Global Aerospace was created in 2001 through the merger of the British Aviation Insurance Group and the Associated Aviation Underwriters in the United States. It has offices in London and Short Hills, N.J.

* General Fire & Casualty Co.'s Geographic Information Systems Integration Project ties the company's Geographic Information System to its policy rating system. General Fire & Casualty is headquartered in Boise, Idaho.

A.M. Best has also recognized five honorable mention entries, including: Ceres Group (QQLink); IMT Insurance Co. (IMT Online); Royal&Sun Alliance/MedRisk Inc. (Healthport); Scottsdale Insurance Co. (Agency Information Exchange); and Valley Oak Systems (iVOS).

The competition is open to the following:

  • Insurance companies;
  • Reinsurers;
  • Third-party technology providers working with an insurer, insurance agency or brokerage; or
  • Related financial services providers engaged in insurance.

Entries can include projects designed to sell, support, educate, underwrite, manage operations, handle claims or support any aspect of conducting an insurance or reinsurance enterprise.

We ask judges to make their determinations based not only on the creativity and resourcefulness employed, but ultimately on whether a project succeeds in meeting its business mission and furthering the business of insurance. Another requirement is that the project has to be in actual use.

John R. Cashin concentrates in insurance regulation, contested insurance and reinsurance, reinsurance arbitrations and insurance securitizations. He joined Stroock's Insurance Practice Group after serving as Deputy Superintendent of the New York State Insurance Department where he was responsible for the Property Casualty Bureau. Prior to his Insurance Department experience he spent twenty years in the reinsurance business with the major reinsurance intermediaries. John also served as Chief Counsel to the New York State Senate Insurance Committee.

Mr. Cashin is a frequent contributor to insurance industry publications. He has served on the Board of Directors of the United Nations Development Corporation and the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Operating Corporation.

Michael Edwards joined American Skyline Insurance Company in 1998 as Executive Vice President of Information Technology. Michael's unique combination of talents in Information Technology and Insurance has brought American Skyline Insurance Company to the forefront of the Insurance & Technology industry. Michael has over 20 years of IT experience and quickly rose to the top of the industry as IT Director for the Wall Street Journal where he oversaw the Dow Jones & Company's Washington D.C. Regional Offices. Michael was also Project Manager and Operations Manager for USF&G and The Hartford Insurance Company. A graduate of the University of Maryland National Leadership Institute and The Greater Baltimore Committee Leadership Program. Michael is an active church and community leader.

Scott Eisdorfer has been Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the Company since 2001 and of its insurance subsidiaries since 1999. From 1996 to 1999, Mr. Eisdorfer was a Vice President and Applications Manager of General Reinsurance Corporation, and prior thereto from 1985 held various information technology positions at National Reinsurance Corporation. Mr. Eisdorfer is a director of Navigators Insurance.

William B. Jenkins, CPCU, is Chairman of ACORD and managing partner for SolvIT Consulting Group LLC, Drexel Hill, Pa. He has also served as vice president and COO of a large regional insurance brokerage firm. Jenkins is a former senior vice president of information services at General Accident Insurance. There he was responsible for application development, technical services, telecommunications, technology planning, agency systems, client services, and data security/recovery; he was a director of two companies in the General Accident organization. Jenkins has been a member of ACORD's Board since 1994, chairing the Operations Committee and serving on the Executive Committee. He previously served as Chairman of the Board of ACORD in 1998 and 1999. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Insurance Society.

Charles Klein has served as a Director of Financial Systems Development at Highmark since May 2002. He joined Highmark from Highmark Life and Casualty Group (HLC), a Highmark subsidiary, where he served as the Chief Information Officer from July of 1998. At HLC Mr. Klein guided the implementation of a web-based self-service insurance portal. This enabled small business to quote and bind coverage, establish electronic fund transfers to pay premium, view their invoices on-line, and perform maintenance to enrollment. A project to replace legacy claims processing, underwriting, and billing systems using web-based technology was funded and embarked upon during Mr. Klein's tenure. Prior to joining Highmark Life and Casualty Group, he was the Director, IT at FORE Systems (now Marconi Communications) with primary responsibility for their global IT organization. At FORE, Mr. Klein provided direction for a complete overhaul of the company's infrastructure including the implementation of the Oracle ERP suite of applications.

Mr. Klein has over twenty years of experience in all facets of Information Technology and has a Masters Degree in Business from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, PA.

Paul Lockmiller is a principal with Booz-Allen & Hamilton's Health and Insurance Group. He specializes in e-business strategy and implementation for insurance companies and other financial services clients.

Lee McDonald is vice president of communications at A.M. Best Company. He oversees the company's news publications, sales promotion and production teams. The publications all focus on the insurance industry and include Best's Review magazine, BestWeek, BestWire and BestDay, an online news service.

He joined A.M. Best six years ago as editor of Best's Review. He spent 13 years with the Gannett Co.

James Snee is vice president for the Information Services Division at A.M. Best Company. He has been with A.M. Best since 1994 and has over 17 years experience in the software industry. His responsibilities at A.M. Best focus on managing various IT initiatives, including the A.M. Best web site, e-business and online applications; development of financial software products; and internal systems to support various corporate projects such as Best's Ratings.

He holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Seton Hall University in New Jersey and a Master's Degree in Business from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Paul C. Tinnirello is executive vice president and chief information officer for the Information Services Division at A.M. Best Company. During his more than 20 years at A.M. Best he has been involved in all phases of IT and is currently responsible for all enterprise technology including corporate infrastructure, financial software product development and e-business/e-commerce development. He holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kean University and a master's degree in software engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is a 2001 recipient of the NJIT Alumni Achievement Award.

Paul is the author/editor of a series of IT books from Auerbach/CRC Press including the "Best Practice Series in Project Management" and "New Directions in Project Management." He regularly contributes to various IT industry publications on management trends in the e-commerce business sector and served as a graduate and undergraduate instructor for state and local colleges in New Jersey. Paul is also a member of the academic advisory board for the College of Computing Sciences at NJIT and was a founding member of the Software Management Association. His past work experiences include Dupont Chemical, IFF and AT&T.

Doug Walters came to IDP in the summer of 2002, as Vice President of Acies Deliveries. He is responsible for ensuring the timely implementation and delivery of IDP's newest policy processing system for the insurance industry, Acies/One. Doug is also responsible for the implementation of SURE, IDP's intelligent underwriting system.

Under Doug's leadership, the Acies/One delivery team has been furnished with the attention to detail needed to provide quality products and services to the clients of IDP. Doug's more than 30 years of insurance and technology experience not only strengthen IDP's insurance expertise, but also offer our clients the secure knowledge that one of their own is aggressively involved in the development of the software products at IDP.

Prior to joining IDP, Doug was a Partner at Sure Performance, a technology consulting firm in Philadelphia.

His career includes 18 years of experience in technology management for insurance companies. As Group Vice President at CNA Insurance, Doug led the information services activities for their $2 billion Specialty Operations Group through the merger of CNA and Continental Insurance. He also directed the development of a commercial lines policy writing system for Continental Insurance that helped Continental become the country's leading writer of commercial packages.

Prior to CNA, Doug spent six years as Technology Director at Reliance Insurance Companies, where he created or upgraded all aspects of their IS organization, transforming it into a modern progressive department with strong planning, development and operational capabilities.

Doug holds a BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been featured in such leading publications as the Wall Street Journal, PC Week and CIO Magazine for his work at CNA. He also holds a certificate in Electronic Commerce Technologies from Penn State University.
