"Marsh & McLennan Building Paperless Brokerage"
J&H Marsh & McLennan Inc. is on the way to building a
paperless brokerage through a global brokerage system and a global brokerage
underwriting application, said Gordon Surbey, managing director of the New
York-based technology group.
After five years and more than $60 million, the company has
developed a system where documents are computerized and passed along from broker
to carrier from the initial quote until the policy is bound and the final bill
is sent and payment received.
"For a broker, half the day is doing placement, and the other half
is doing paperwork," Surbey said. "If you can change that, you can do more
business."
Surbey and Ken Auman, associate partner with Anderson Consulting,
spoke Tuesday at "Fulfilling the e-Promise", the A.M. Best Co.'s 11th annual
insurance information management conference in Boston.
Surbey demonstrated the computer system, which operates on a private
web site. Brokers are able to track transactions every step of the way, and
brokers in different offices can access the information. Accessory documents can
also be attached to the system.
The system allows the company to use a team approach instead of a
single broker. Surbey said that was difficult for some brokers to accept.
"They felt it eroded their power," Surbey said. However, the program
allows brokers to share information, and increases their power, he said.
He said eventually the network could be adopted so clients could
also tap into the system to check on the progress of their requests.
"It's not meant to replace any face to face negotiations," Surbey
said.
He said the system won't be affected by the merger with Sedgwick.
"This is the way we are doing business when we go forward," Surbey
said. "It doesn't' matter who we merge with."
