"Chubb Tests Extranet Designed for Agents and
Insureds"
Chubb & Son is pilot testing an extranet
designed to create direct, value-added services for agents and insureds through
Internet-delivered applications.
It allows agents to view policy and billing information;
access claims information, including adjusters' notes, in real time; and
download forms, said Donald Garvey, assistant vice president, Chubb & Son,
Warren, N.J. Some of the extranet's functions are also for insureds. For
example, if an insured is notified that a policy is being cancelled because
payment wasn't received, the customer can access billing information to
determine whether the check and the cancellation notice crossed in the mail.
When agents log onto the extranet through Chubb's Web site,
the system recognizes who they are and what type of information is important to
them. When agents click into the system, the menu screen will reflect the
information that interests them.
Chubb uses e-commerce to support global brand development;
strengthen ties to the distribution system; facilitate communication and
commerce with clients and business partners; extend applications to business
partners; complement and enhance execution of company strategies; and penetrate
new customer segments to create and develop new sources of revenue.
Chubb developed its extranet because of the need to:
- Create direct, value-added services and a competitive
advantage for agents.
- Perpetuate and ensure the corporate image of security and
integrity.
- Safeguard the integrity and authenticity of information on
the Internet and Web-enabled applications.
Speaking Oct. 18 at the A.M. Best Insurance Information and
Technology Conference, "Continuing the E-volution," Deb Bronson, a senior vice
president at Chubb, described the company's extranet as "a flexible, robust
architecture implemented to provide a secure environment that is present, but
invisible to a broad range of customers."
This architecture establishes the one way that security in
e-commerce applications at Chubb will be implemented, allowing current and
future applications to plug in and provide a safe, secure and easy-to-use
gateway, said Bronson, who manages Chubb's electronic commerce and corporate
systems department.
Chubb's extranet is available 24 hours a day, seven days a
week, offering single sign-on, integrated applications.
The first challenge in creating the extranet was to decide
whether to select an existing security application or build one, Gardner said.
The company decided to buy an application. That created the need for Chubb's
information technology department to learn how to build the extranet application
with the security middleware.
Security is assured at the agency level with user IDs and
passwords issued to each employee at every agency. Agency managers are
responsible for quickly revoking IDs and passwords of employees who leave to
maintain the integrity of the system.
