Extranet to Take Prominent Role in
Internet-Related Business Technology
Business-to-business communication will loom large as insurers
seek to make the best use of rapidly evolving internet-related technologies,
according to panelists speaking at A.M. Best's 10th annual Insurance Information
Services Conference Monday.
The oft-repeated word was "extranets"--networks that connect
companies with their field offices, corporate customers and business partners in
two-way exchanges of information.
"The extranet is...something you will become involved in
whether you know it or not," said Lee Love, director of strategic marketing at
Netscape. He predicted that the ability to communicate electronically outside an
organization will become more important that internal communication.
In dealing with customers across the internet, companies will
find that customers are less comfortable with all-electronic transactions as the
complexity of the product increases, said Schoeman Rudman of IBM Corp. This will
requiring integrating electronic commerce with the ability to let customers
speak to a live person while still on line, Rudman said. The lines of insurance
seen as most likely to be sold on line within the next year are relatively
simple products--term life insurance, automobile and homeowners insurance, said
Ralph Severini of Sun Micro Systems.
